Wheel Hoss is one of our favorite old fiddle tune (we have lots of those). It's a Bill Monroe instrumental tune that rips along and sounds like a hard drive wheel horse pulling a loaded hay wagon and that's exactly what this reel is for us. It's the reel we strap on to our two handed Spey and Switch rods to do battle with anadromous fish. This reel is a beefy and imposing piece of machinery.
The Wheel Hoss reel has the classic ported look of snake handle click and pawl but the mechanical guts of modern drag. Don't let the retro vibe fool you this thing has a smooth drag with very little to no start-up inertia. We totally respect the purist pursuit of battling great fish with click and pawl only, totally get it, but we are honest enough to know that fishing like that, and ever landing a hard fighting fish is probably out of reach for most of us mere mortals. So we worked to find a reel that had nice vintage aesthetic and modern capabilities.
The mid arbor design and super wide spool means it has capacity for large spey heads and shooting lines with ample amount backing for pools like the infamous "Instant Backing" on the Dean. This thing is built like a tank without being too heavy.
