Brush Creek Reel
The brush creek reel is the best balance of value and features we've found in a reel. It's fully machined quality build features a durable disc drag with super smooth start up and plenty of fish stopping power.
It's drag is NOT sealed, but guess what that has never stopped us from fishing it in the salt. Egads! Right? That's blasphemous! Well here's a little secret. If you rinse your reels after each use in the salt and lube them generously a couple times per year — they won't corrode! Wait what?
Seriously, all that mumbo jumbo about sealed drags is just marketing babble to get you to spend big dollars on features you don't need, seriously. Mostly because fly reel folks think you're lazy, and maybe you are? If you are a bit lazy about maintenance, and we have friends who are, and that's not bad thing, buy a sealed drag reel for salt fishing like our Matecumbe reel. It will save you in the long run.
We've been fishing unsealed drags in the salt since we started fly fishing the salt 15 years ago. We take care of our stuff and know what rinsing and lubing bearings does for them — it keeps them working! If done properly, maintenance will ensure that they will last a lifetime. Neglect will ensure that every season you'll be shelling the dollars for new stuff.
This is the reel we caught 12 bonefish and 8 permit on in one day in Belize this year. Seriously, it's still working, it didn't die. It wasn't the end of the world. Nobody made fun of us, it didn't ruin my fishing and we still killed it. We caught more Permit than anyone else at the lodge that week, on an un-selaed drag reel! Mainly because we didn't have our sealed reel ready yet. It is much safer to use a sealed drag reel, but you DO NOT NEED have a sealed drag reel in the salt if you know how to rinse your gear. Serioously, just take the spool off and rinse it.
This thing has a great drag. More then enough to stop screaming bonefish or carp runs. Crank it down and it stops the biggest fish you can find.
It's large arbor design helps pick up line really well and it's sub $100, price tag means you can still buy some beers at the end of the week. It's made to be light, agile, and simple and pair up with today's fast and light rods. It's not $800, but you might think it should be when you get your hands on it.
We don't carry a dizzying array of sizes just the essential 5/6 and 7/8 sizes.
